Film and television sets are busy, high-pressure environments where creativity and logistics meet. Between camera moves, lighting changes and multiple departments working side by side, the potential for something to go wrong is always present. Managing that risk takes planning, awareness and experience.

At Calvin Hanks Health & Safety, we work with production teams to help keep sets safe, compliant and running efficiently. Our role is to support your crew so they can focus on their jobs without unnecessary disruption or delay.

On-Set Safety in TV & Film – Supporting Productions to Work Safely and SmoothlyWhy Safety Needs to Be Built In

On-set safety isn’t only about preventing accidents; it’s about keeping the production on track. A well-planned approach helps avoid downtime, protects equipment, satisfies insurance requirements and maintains professional standards across all departments.

Issues such as working at height, vehicle movement, stunts, crowd scenes and temporary structures can all bring added complexity. Having qualified health and safety professionals on board from the start allows these factors to be addressed before they cause problems on shoot days.

How We Work on Set

We begin by assessing each production’s unique needs, reviewing scripts, locations and set plans to identify potential hazards and propose practical control measures. During filming, our consultants are present on set, monitoring activity, advising department heads and helping the team adapt safely to any changes in schedule or environment.

Behind the scenes, we manage the necessary paperwork, including risk assessments, method statements and compliance records, so that documentation meets industry and insurer expectations.

Supporting Skills and Awareness

Alongside on-set support, we provide training for production managers, crew leads and other key personnel. Courses such as IOSH Managing Safely: Productions and Live Events and the Production Safety Passport give teams the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions on set.

When to Involve Us

Productions benefit most when safety is considered early in the process, particularly for:

·        Shoots involving stunts, special effects or complex logistics

·        Large crews or multiple filming units

·        Public-facing locations or remote sites

·        Tight shooting schedules with limited room for delay

Bringing in on-set health and safety expertise helps keep everyone working confidently and the production moving forward.
